Jackson Rising

For today's studio session we are focussing on layout design, doing a day long brief to fulfill this. The brief set is for a fictitious exhibition at MoMa. In this there are two tasks.

Task 1
The first task was to design an A5 leaflet.

We had 45 minutes for this task with a set folder that we had logos & information to include.

Here is my attempt:

Final Design:

We then was given another task which is to design a 10 page concertina booklet. In this we were given body copy and images to work with. We aren't allowed to edit the images in any way, only crop them down, and as a challenge the body copy varies for each section so we have to figure out a way to balance it all out.

So firstly, I did a mock up of how the concertina was going to work, as this would be largely dependant on the layout due to where the front cover had to be etc....

Here is my final:

This task gives a lot more opportunity to be more creative than when working on the leaflet. There is more space and more elements to work with.
After working around a general layout  I developed the design until I was happy with it. I stuck with the white background on the artist info pages as I thought this would make the copy more readable.

The main issue in creating this concertina was down to the amount of body copy. Two of the artists had a large amount, whereas two had quite a small amount. I decided on balancing the amount each was given so it looked as though it was only a taster to the exhibition and there was more for each artist.

So from this I decided on my pages and worked out that I didn't need a back page so I went for a front cover and an intro page. Then dedicating two pages to each artist as there was 4 artists and 10 Pages.

Overall I am quite pleased with my design. Not being able to edit the images in anyway was something I found quite hard to work around, but in the end I came up with an overall design that I was happy with. For the time limit I think I designed something that was pretty good, however it definitely needs cleaning up and developing a bit more.

After the time limit was up we all put our designs out and went round the studio to look at what everyone had come up with. This was a very interested in this exercise because it showed how everyone had taken the information and designed differently to each other. There were obviously quite similar ideas, but all carried out and designed in completely different ways.

The third part to todays session was to extend the work and see how far we could take the designs and into what other situations this could be applied to. This is something I took home and decided to expand the branding on to other elements such as a ticket.

I made a list of what I could potentially design for:
  • Posters
  • Leaflets/flyers
  • Interior way finding/walls
  • Exterior building promotion
  • Bus Stop
  • Publication Promotion
  • Website/App
  • Invitations
  • Tickets
  • Stationary

I have decided to do tickets, posters & invites, although this is not alot I don't want to take this over to another night as I have planned my time so therefore I am going to develop this task as much as I can in one night. So I am not going to restrict but I don't want to set my heart on doing too much!

Tickets

This is the ticket for the event, I have kept this simple as this is something you get after you have ordered therefore you don't need anything fancy you just need the important information on it.

Poster

This is just the flyer enlarged into a poster, although I think its important to create a very good event knowledge so they can relate all elements towards the event a brand recognition.

Invites

I thought I would keep within the same style, I felt the most important part was the title of the event then I wanted them to notice that they was invited. I have used the words your invited to give them a personal connection.I like the use of the black banner in the middle also as it creates the main focus on the title.
