Yoke exhibition

I went to the yoke exhibition opening tonight to see if my work had been used in the exhibition. I didn't notice my work for a while as they put it on a horizontal line so was difficult to read. In the end my friend found it and pointed it out to me. Which I wasn't too bothered about because they did mention that they could manipulate it in anyway they wanted to suit the layered design.

Here is the posters that was put up & around college. There was some confusion about this at first due to the small space they are using and they mentioned putting the prints up in A3. With the amount of people on the list we wasn't sure if this is the people who have entered or if these are the people within the exhibition.

This is my printed unfortunately they wasn't printed in the A3 but I was pleased to see my work on the wall even though, it was only in A5.

Secret 7" Vinyl Competition

So I started by breaking down the brief to a more defined understanding....

So after my research I knew exactly what I wanted and I am hoping I can just get this to look good when on paper.

I am going to draw a skyline and break a division with a square to represent a screen.

I have traced over an existing skyline and then I have expanded upon it to make it into my own. I quite like this look alone but it doesn't fit with the quotation from the lyrics.

This is what I am going to use to break up the pretty & the dull side of the city, with the square representing a screen.

This is the skyline with colour added in. I am not too sure about the straight line at the bottom and I am not too sure how i can correct this but I am going to try and paint it out.

I am not 100% happy with this but I have tried many ways and this was the best advancement.

This is my final vinyl sleeve, I am proud of it minus the squiggle bottoms I may try & rectify this after the submission as I don't have time before the submission. I have added flowers on the corner of the screen to add more of the feeling of a pretty city. I am very happy with the concept of my vinyl and think that this is stronger than my design personally, I have explained this when I have submitted this to the website.

Now i have submitted and waiting for information to hear if I have been chosen for the exhibition or not.

Sadly I wasn't chose in the final 700 this was very upsetting for me as I thought my concept was very strong. Although there was a lot more competition this year more than other years, many from studios etc....

Mocking up my design elements

This is my mock up for the internet banner. I wanted it to be a main story and therefore chose the middle top one to place. I think the banner is very fitting within the page but i also catches your eye.

This is my sandwich board mock-up. I am very happy with this mock-up I think it does look fitting and if a background was placed you wouldn't be able to tell this was a mock-up.

I am very happy with these mock-ups. I worked out the use of the lighting effects in photoshop. I still think there is some more work needed but I am quite happy with the placing and also the placing of the promotions as they don't look distorted etc...

Applying pattern to with new logo

So I applied it to the banner first, I thought this would be the easiest to start with due to the extra space etc... I really like the contrast & use of colour and the pattern as the background. I have used yellow for highlights which works very well. I am very pleased with this outcome and my favourite is the bottom one.. I just need to see if Sam agrees now. I have tried applying this to the aisle promos too but it didn't have the same effect so therefore think I am going to leave the design of this as long and it keeps in-fitting with the rest of the secret sweep design.

So then I decided to play with the placing of the pattern on the poster next. I haven't totally redesigned these I have just been placing the pattern where possible to see where is best. I think this has worked and just the right balance as too much of the pattern could complicate the design. Again my favourite is the one with mostly a green background with minimal information (the bottom one).

I have applied it to the web advert, but I don't think it works as well. I can't use white as a background as this is there background colour and therefore blends and created the wrong effect. I am going to show Sam the designs I have done but I am sure that she will agree that this is not appropriate as it also doesn't match the rest of the website.

Logo Development

We then decided that we should change the logo because it did clash too much with the both elements in use. So we Sam did a vector of a magnifying glass to enhance the idea of looking in depth at the items.

So we also decided to keep the lines clean rather than a brush look on the logo as this will then match the rest of the design. Below is the final developed logo.

(FINAL LOGO)

We have kept the type as courier as we thought this was a part of the initial logo that we thought worked and got across the idea of the secret sweep and looking for stickers. Due to the aesthetic connoting a typewriter.

Pattern Application to current design

So I started applied the logo onto the design but then we both agreed that the trolley within the logo and the pattern is too much therefore we thought we would try and change the logo as this could do with developing anyway as this is something we did right at the beginning of the brief and haven't developed at all throughout. I do although, really like the effect of the stamp on the lines as this shows a real stamp effect.

Pattern Development

So we decided to create the pattern with the trolley that was in our logo. This is relevant to the event and to the branding identity.

So I created a pattern with the trolley. This was keeping the stroke like the same. I decided that I would place the trolley with the next line line opposition with the trolley above. Although, Sam then pointed out this would create problems with the cutting off at the edge as there would never be a clean line. Which is a good factor to point out and I am glad that she realised this now and not once we had started to apply it to design.

I decided that I would also do a pattern with cans as using the trolley pattern with the trolley within the logo might be too much. So I developed the can vector from an image I took from the internet. I think this might be too simple and too much of a parallel design which makes it boring.

Wedding Invitations - Save The Date

Again I have used the same style of lettering as the other two parts of this invite. I am going to use the same stock as the RSVP to keep some consistency & the same ink.

I am wanting to create something special for the save the date as this is something you should keep on show to keep reminding you to make sure you book it off work or don't plan anything else etc...

Therefore I thought I would create something unusual... I thought I would have something you unveil then it makes it more exciting and then sticks in your mind more.

I just don't think this is wow factor enough! I think that maybe if I make the bunting tactile rather than printed this could work.

The idea of having a mini envelope attached to a titles stock and then you pull out a bunting which is attached to the envelope and you drape out. Then on the bunting it will have the main important points on each bunting.

I decided to design the buntings first as this is needed if I want to put the details on actual string, I am going to use the same paper that I have used for the RSVPs.

These are the newly updated bunting, I have decided to have a scooping pattern across the top as this will be seen on both sides. I have created more buntings so that the information is more clear.

It is going to say:

Katie & Nathan are (tying the knot) on 28th June 2015.

The (tying the knot) didn't work when it said all three of these words within one bunting, and separating them made the bunting too long so I am going to replace this with some string tied in a lose knot, so it will symbolise this instead of saying it.

So here is my crafting to make this idea and to see how it works?

These are all my mock-ups for the envelope I wanted a nice sculpted edge, I found it difficult I started really small at first but then realised this is unrealistic and that the bunting would have to be very small and unpractical.

Again I am going to say that I am very lucky that I can use such nifty methods due to my client been quite crafty herself since her wedding planning. She said she would willing do anything with the materials as long as I show her and that it was straight forward... This process is very simple, she will have a lot of cutting out which I might offer to do over the summer but the putting together is simple.

These are the images from my photography shoot... I think this has really created the wow factor. I am very mad as I have lost all the images of the crafting of the bunting and the use of the parcel string and therefore the progression of this has not been blogged.

Checking Consistency

So today me & Sam came together to check our consistency of the project. We realised this was an important factor especially when we are used to working in totally different styles. We made a plan to have all our elements dedicated to use designed by today and that we would check consistency and whether we like them or which one we like best etc...

We realised that we both wasn't 100% satisfied with our work and therefore this made us doubt our strength within the competition.

So we decided to try and change the colour scheme as we thought this is what was making the design look cheap and hard to work with. We looked at all the other Morrisons elements such as the fuel saving branding and the nu.me branding to see if we could challenge any elements from them to enhance our design.

We looked on the M.kitchen blog this is where the put on recipes for people to try on low budgets and quick meals for busy families etc.. This led us to the colour of the beige where we thought this would work due to the colour of inspectors jackets been commonly know as the beige.

So I thought I would try this with my banner to see how it would work. I thought, this worked well and Sam also liked it, but then Sam tried it with her booklet she has made for the points card. But I did agree that it didn't work quite, we did pursue with this and tried many different variations but then we decided to call it a day and see if anyone could think of anything after a break because we started getting very frustrated and confused with how to make this work.

Ballet Scene Logo Competition

I am a keen enthusiast of Ballet and therefore, I jumped at the chance at creating a logo for a dance shop on 99designs.

Here is my interpretation of the brief:

I thought about making the pointe shoe the main logo vector of the shop although they did stress that they wanted the name to be a focal point so I thought I would make this the side image.

I created my own lettering for the logo as this makes the ownership easier for the client and therefore don't need any licenses for the fonts etc... I think I am going to make it like the ribbons of shoes and therefore the stroke of the lettering needs to be differing in weights so.

These are the two final logos I submitted I was very happy with this and I believe it answered the brief well and a good balanced logo for the branding.
I also submitted this mock-up to show how the branding wold work and the professional look of the logo when apply to merchandise.

Unfortunately, again I was not shortlisted this was upsetting as most of the logos that was shortlisted wasn't very orientated towards ballet and therefore, mine was just not what they was asking for although this did answer the brief. I will learn from this maybe I should have looked into the shop more to see the style rather than taking the brief literally.

Typography session Two

Kerning is the space between letters.
You should never kern in, always take the largest space and kern out to match that.

We then had a go at kerning at our names.
You have to choose the largest gap and work from that starting from the start letter to the last.
My largest gap was between the A & the S.

How do you break a sentence into two lines?

This is the how I broke it down, as this is where the pause is within the sentence.
So therefore, a comma should be after sentence.

This also another way you could break but personally I like the break above as this is also more aesthetically pleasing.

Hierarchy

So we was asked to order so you read from the top to the bottom. So above is my attempt!

We was asked to sit back from the computer screens and then blink, then open them as see what we read first. When I did this I saw ONE as the main focus.

He then showed us an example with the words placed horizontally also. This then allowed us to order the way we read the numbers without changing the weight & size.

This was my attempt at placing hierachy with using horizontal placing aswell as landscape.

If you place a word upside down then you will always read this word last!

Its important that you use a font with a small x-height because

This line length is too long and tedious to read. We could increase the line spacing although now we would also have to increase the type size.

So we have to go to two columns.
Don't ever centre align text unless it was small amount of body cody possibly with a script font.

In order to do this, we have had to put extra space between word so therefore impacts the reading.

Why do we have right-align?

This is not normal and therefore our brains would not correctly understand the line as this has no specific start and the left side where we start reading is all jagged therefore losing our point each time.

Three columns- the gutters stop us reading over the line.

Never have more than 10-12 words on a line. This is average for a novel. The minimum number of words in a line is 6.

2 Column is probably the most intelligent.
4 Column is the least intelligent.

3 Column tends to be used in a magazine.

You can use indentation to get more text on a page rather than line spaces. The average indentation is 3 to 4 letter spaces.

If you want to save space justify the text.
If you want to use more space increase the line space.
Its pointless having an indentation and also a line space, as then you are saying something twice.
