Creating Boards for Crit

I at this crit I had only created one bottle so if everyone likes this bottle this is when I will expand this layout onto the second bottle using different description though with different colours so they both have their own identification without losing brand identity.

Bottle Mock-ups

These are my first mock-ups I am pretty happy with them to say this is the first time I have mocked a bottle label up and found all the tools to allow this to happen alone. I need to get a better image of the bottle as this is not allowing me to cut the bottle out with a straight edge due to the background. Also, the highlights of the bottle are very prominent and therefore making it hard to take it in as a whole.

I am wanting a full colour lid as this will add some block colour and create attention for the bottle.

I have kept the info for the back of the bottle the same for this mock-up I might change it if I have time but I think that the info is more about the layout rather than the aesthetics and therefore surely it will be laid out correctly at the mo.

Final Decisions

Final Decisions.

I have decided to create a finishings look book with 5 finishes in which also comes with 5 little how to booklets that explain the processes individually in each of them.

I want the booklets to be very hand rendered to reflect the feeling of finishes as they are very hand rendered too.

So far I have drawn my titles for my booklets and also drawn all the images for each of the steps.

These are just a few of my drawings I have done for my booklet. I am very happy with the look of my drawings as I wanted them not to be too perfect so they can see that things don't always come out perfect, just like finishes.

I have started to take off the background as I used a cartridge paper which was a downfall which I will remember for next time, to your printer paper.

How To.. Booklets
Now I have started to develop y pages in my booklet...

Here is one of the pages I have started. I have decided to use a scripty font to mimic the hand rendered title and also the images. I have chose to place the images adjacent to the step and by alternating sides it makes it clear and easy to differentiate between them. And therefore they can skip between things if they can remember a few steps but not them all.

I am unsure if the images are a good enough quality as they are quite pixelated which I don't understand because it isn't like they have been stretch. I think its due to using the magic wand tool as I need to use that to take away the background. I am going to ask others what they think in my crit.

I am also going to laminate each of these pages which I still need to test as I have ordered the laminating pouches off the internet as I wanted matt and everywhere I have looked they don't have them in stock or are very expensive.

Look Book.

I have started some of the pages for my look book:

These are the two pages so far that I have done for my look book. I have decided to not use the same style throughout the book, due to the finishings having different qualities and therefore different things look better. For example foil looks good with thin small details to be foiled. And then the flock works better with thin lines such a type.

I need to still decide how I am going to bind the books and also what stocks as they work better on different stocks just like the different qualities in styles. I think I am going to ask this as one of my questions in the critique.

I need to also work out how I am going to package all the books together so they come as a pack. Although, I dont know if I want to package the little how to books separately due to you been able to take the books into the workshop as they are laminated and wipeable.

Front Cover.

I have started to design the front cover as I have decided on the name Attention to Detail. I thought, with this name I had to create something fancy with small details. So therefore I decided to create the title surrounded by a fancy frame of swirls.

I am very happy with my final design. I like the full page use for the title of the page. And it doesn't give much away. I going to use grey stock with a white ink design. I have put trimming marks on so I can get it more perfectly centered on the front. With the spine info centered on within the spine and not overspilling.

I have decided to link together my book by embossing the front cover of the how to book. And deboss the page in the look book. So you can see the connection between the two rather than having to open the front cover to see the title. If time wasn't an issue I would have screen printed the front cover like the cover of the look book. Here is my laser cut letters to deboss & emboss the pages to create a key.

Creative Sessions Four

Creative Session Four.

We have been given a file to make sure that it is ready to be sent to be printed without any mistakes, as some have been deliberately done, for us to correct.

This is a five ink print job.
The client has agreed to this.

You are looking for 9 mistakes:

The is a jpeg. file image.
The scale of the images is 12.9%
Another has been expanded to 233%
One of the images is RGB.
There is an RGB colour been used.
Pantone 363C is not needed in swatch palette.
The resolution of one image is 536PPI
Another resolution is too low 200PPI
The image on the left is not set of the bleed.
The ink of the website at the bottom has been used as a registration, rather than black.

To rectify these problems we need to:

We need to save the file as a tiff. or a psd. file then reconnect the link.
We need to open this image in photoshop and scale to the right size and save then it will automatically update.
We need to double click on the swatch and change it to CMYK & create a tint of it.
We need to delete this Pantone swatch before sent to print.
The resolution needs to be changed in to 300PPI on photoshop and then saved and it will be automatically saved.
You need to extend the image out to the end of the bleeds.
You just need to highlight the text and click on black to change the colour.

There is a greyscale image in Indesign but there is colour attached to it also. But it is a greyscale image in photoshop and they have added spot colour for the background in InDesign.

There is a quick way of finding all this information out.
It is by packaging it.
This makes a copy of your indesign file, and the images & fonts you have used. This is everything you have to give to the printer. But before it packages it, it will give you a summary about your document.

You can also save it as a PDF.
The highest quality is press quality, doesn't include bleed or crop marks.
High quality print is for proofs.
If you needed to email this then you can put it on issuu.
Smallest file size this is if you are transferring from pne computer to another, this wouldn't print well!

Bottle Lid Design

I decided that I would use the title of the drink on the bottle top & use the words with Purdey's to make the experience more personal to the consumer. The use of the integration of the underline with the join of words to create connection and flow.

I have chose to use the green as the background and the yellow as the type as the yellow would be a very fade and the yellow is a deep yellow and therefore this allows the contract to be clean to make the lettering legible.

Design Development

Design Development.

I have re-read the brief and and decided if I just did do a look book then, this would not fully meet the criteria of the brief. So therefore, I am still going to make a look book but also I am going to make little how to books... for each of the finishings.

But I want my book to be a book you pick up due to its aesthetics, and you want to pick it up & feel the quality. As this is what feelings I get from finishings, when used within design. I want to feel them & pick them up because they give it quality & give it more value.

I have started to look for quotations for the look book. I want these to be short & sweet but relate to the finish personally without been about the finish:

Design with a little sparkle.
Make it happen.
Foiling never fails?
The magpie moment.
Scratching the surface.
Wake up & smell the print.

I thought of many which I research into extensively to find quotes that had relevance to the finish. There I thought about what the finish look like, the word itself & what was related to the finish.

Beneath the surface - Laser cut
Lets flock together - Flocking
Make an Impression - Embossing
Make an Impact, Let it Shine - Spot Varnish
Magpie Moment - Foiling

I think these are all very relevant and was very impressed with my choices of quotations. I have chosen to do only 5 as I need to still develop the how to books. I need to write the content & draw the illustrations.

I have also decided to create a stock book to show what works best on what papers. Also, the different flocks & foils etc... Although, this would make the audience to be just to LCA unless I commented saying these was just a small selection of choice which is out there. But then what is the point for this stock swatches.

I have tried to look online where to buy other flocks & foils but you have to buy them in large bulks and they are very expensive so therefore I have decided that I am not going to create a stock book.

Now going on to the title of the book.

Im

    ive

Press on!

You can go your own way.

Live what you love.

Pick your eye candy

Post print

Attention to detail.

Last minute touches.

I have decided to go with attention to detail. This because I did like last minute touches but this relates them to been quick & they are not so therefore it would be irrelevant. I also did like pick your eye candy, but I wasn't sure if this was a good title as the quotations are so thought out for the finishings that you don't just pick subject for a finishing you pick the finishing for the subject. So therefore eye candy is saying that you can pick any for anything just to make it look good & this is not necessarily good design.

Title: Attention to Detail
This is going to be my heading as these are the detail within the design and you have to plan these before creating your design. It brings out the important details within design but also get attention to your work too.

I have also started writing my own content. The step-by-step guides, of how to flock, foil, lasercut, spot varnish & emboss/deboss. I wrote it by hand quickly first. Then I typed it up to refine & make sure the steps make sense. Here the wrote up version is:

Lettering Development

So I started with the basic of the type. I traced the typeface Brain Flower but made the stroke thicker and put my own slight twist upon it. All the rest I have done freehand, using different styles of stroke. For Natural & Apple & Grape, I have used a flat edge stroke. this has created the thick & thin lines. Therefore, the aesthetic is more raw.

Then I added illustration as I wanted a justified look so I wanted the blank spaces filled as it put it off balance. I have used the key words in the title to make the illustrations relevant.

Now I wanted to link them within the lettering some how so they become one rather than separate drawing at the side. I think this has brought the look together and now looks more defined.

Then I thought that I should included some quick relation to the fruit that is within the drink so customers don't have to read the full thing to know the main flavours.

Then I decided to add colour and the logo, as I thought I should add the logo at this stage as this could totally mix up the composition of the layout.
Then I thought I would add the sparkling water so that the bottom was again balanced. This meant that I could place the logo fully across the bottom and keep the layout consistent again. I have decided that I don't like the tone of these colours and therefore I want them more brighter and complimentary to each other.

These are my final colour variations. I think these work well together and I am very happy with the colour variation. This has really made the letter come to life. The main info that people need of natural drink and the flavour of apple and grape are the eye catching elements natural because it is the biggest lettering at the top and then the apple & grape because of the colour and the next size down from natural.

I have decided to have the Purdey's as the bottom of the bottle and possibly keep the underline going right round the bottle. I think the logo is still prominent without it been the main focus of the bottle.

Defining Audience & Content

Defining Audience & Content.

My audience is for art students who are already interested in screen printing but don't know about the finishes you can do which also add definition to your work to make them special.

Therefore I am guessing they are going to middle class with a well educated background. They are going to be creative and therefore will appreciate the effort & style of the design.

The age range will be around 16-25 therefore do not have a lot of money so need to keep the materials to a minimum. So it brings down the cost if the book was to be sold.

More than likely will attend an art college and therefore the materials & equipment will be avaliable to them and if need more information. I don't want to explain the process of screen printing as I don't want people to get bored as I know how boring it is when you have to go over the process of screen printing over & over again.

The content will be a look a book which will make you want to pick it up so therefore the cover needs to stand out and people will be interested to what it is. Because if people know its about learning things they may not what to buy it. And therefore can attract people who are not knowing fans of finishes.

I am going to create little how to... booklets for each of the finishes. I think that I am going to make a key to relate each booklet to the right finish just incase people don't know anything about finishes. I might also laminate the little how to booklets so that they can take this into the workshop as the look book will be made for clean hands only.

Initial Ideas

Initial Ideas.

To start with I created a big mind map with the different ideas I had for factors such as the audience & what I could talk about with the information I have found during my research.

This map helped me collect my thoughts together. As I was very all over the place as I didn't just want to make a standard print book. And therefore due to this I was stuck & didn't know how to move on.

My first thought was to create a DIY screen printing pack. But then I thought this would be very restricting & expensive due to the need in putting in all the essentials into the pack & also although, I could explain how to screen print I am not an expert to be able to explain how to create a screen etc... And what materials would be best. Although, I could have found this information over the internet, I didn't want to do this due to then this not been my words & therefore I wouldn't have learnt anything from this brief. Also, I hadn't practiced screen printing for the research of this brief because I have already done it many-a-times, and therefore would have been pointless.

So expanding from this point, I decided to look at what I have research into the most. This was definitely finishes due to this is what I had never really looked into as I thought it would have been very hard & take too much time.

So from this I think I am going to make a look book. Which will have all the different finishes in. Such as foiling, flocking, binding, spot varnish, laser cut, folding. ETC...

Thoughts up to now from research...

I think that I am going to keep the shape of the bottle currently as I think this really works it practical and looks effective, I am going to make the neck of the bottle smaller and grip of the lid and neck tighter due to the use of the same material. When I open bottles of Purdey's it always runs down the neck before opening the bottle fully.

I am going to use an aluminum bottle as I wanted to keep the silver effect but I didn't see the need of a sleeve. So therefore I thought the use of printing on to the bottle itself would be more practical for the environment.

I am going to play with lettering for the bottle, to describe the ingredients as this is something that was a common theme from possible customers, that the drink was too secretive for them to spend on an expensive drink that they don't now if they are going to like.

Vernon Street Discussion

Vernon Street Discussion.

I went to see Sarah at Vernon to ask her about her expertise on book binding. I spoke to her about how I would attach single sheets together because I need the pages to be single due to the finishing on each page. But I also wanted to hard back bind the book together.

I know from experience from been on my ND course that I had to make tabs to join the single pages together due to the specialist paper I used didn't come in any bigger than A4 sheets.

Although When I mentioned this to her she said that I didn't have to do this due to that I can perfect bind the pages together, then attach a hard back bind book to the perfect bind. The only downfall of this is that you won't be able to open the book fully & if someone does the pint will break.

Although she did say that I could make a tab & join them together and stitch it that way but the perfect binding would be quicker and easier to establish.

Then I also asked her about the box I am wanting to make. And she said that either way I could do this either screen print the material first before I attach it to make the box. Or if I am wanting to make it with wood then I can foil/flock onto wood, I just need to build up with paper around the wood.

Creative Session Three

Creative Session Three

This is how you would set up for commercial print in InDesign & also how to use colour?

When working with multiple pages then this is the software to use.

Recap on the InDesign setup:

Number of Pages: If you are working on the booklet and using a saddle stitch binding then you have to work in multiple of four. It's not only the content that we need to know but we need to know how it is going to be bound.

Facing Pages: This is so two pages will face each other and display them as a spread in screen. This is useful on magazines or booklets.

Start Page Number: You can automatically number the pages. This allows you to say that the first page is going to be 3, then the third page of your document will be number one.

Primary Text Frame: If you are working with a multiple page document and you have text on all pages. This will put a text frame on every single page of your document.

Page Size: This is what your designing and the finished printed trimmed size of what you are going to produce.

Width & Height: You are much more likely to type in width & height than using in a standard page size.

Columns: You don't have to use this as if yet as it will help with layout but can add afterwards.

Gutter: Is the space between the columns! IF YOU DON'T NEED TO USE THESE THEN YOU JUST LEAVE AS 1 COLUMN.

Margin: If this is a fixed page then this will help you design the same on every page. White space is good!

If you click more options:

Bleed: To compensate for the inaccuracies for the final trimming. 3mm is a standard amount. But that us not set in stone.

Slug: This is the outside area of the page used for printer marks and folding marks. The area is trimmed off once everything has been printed.

This will allow you change this once you have set up your document.

This will allow you change all the details above after you have made your document.

This is by default that it will be on the right side of the screen or get to it by using the window tab at the top then colour and swatches palette. This is a lot simpler than photoshop & illustrator.
This is the list view in which we had to chose this formulae on photoshop as it shows you the ink mixtures too.

To apply colour in InDesign is exactly the same as adding colour in illustrator.

When working with text you are working with text you have an additional option of adding colour.
There is an option to add an outline to text although this would effect legibility as you can see below.

This is the swatches palette menu you need to add a new colour swatch here is how we do that:

These values are very important. In illustrator we came across what this little grey square represented next to your CMYK info values are, this means

There is also the same way of how you add the swatches to the bank and also use pantone swatches too i which there is always a field where you can search for codes. Until you type a number into the field then the spot colour will not change.

This how you create a tint of a colour. It will show you what percentage that the tint is too here is how you do it:

What do we need to pay attention to when working in InDesign so that thinks work when been sent to print.

In Photoshop:
  • CMYK this is colour mode in photoshop it is best to work in RGB while working on the screen.
  • Actual Size: You need to work to the actual size it is going to be.
  • Resolution has to at 300dpi
  • File Type has to be saved as a tiff. or psd. NEVER as a jpeg. as you will lose image quality. If you want to keep your layers in photoshop save it as a psd. but if you want the background to be transparent then you have to work with a psd.
In Illustrator:
  • CMYK - The colours that have been applied to the artwork.
  • If you are working with vectors they are infinitely scalable.
  • Save as ai. it is possible to copy and paste in InDesign as you can do this with illustrator.

When putting an image in InDesign you cant make it smaller or bigger in InDesign due to the process that InDesign has to do to make it decrease all the images need to be smallened in photoshop to the actual size.

When we open a new document our swatch palette will refresh itself.

So we need to place the image on the page by:

This will come up and you have just have to click where you want it to be placed.

Now I have placed this image the ink colour has added to my colour palette at the side. So you can work with the same two spot colours.

This is the spot colours that have been use in this image have been added to my swatches.

To add a file to your page you need to place it not open as this is the way you add any other file in InDesign.

The file is low quality when we place images, this is due to the images been linked and therefore you can manage the images within the InDesign document and means we can edit them in photoshop & illustrator and they will automatically update. And the InDesign document doesn't become too large with all the information.

If you get any messages about an embedded profile it is just because it has been made in an older version than the one we are using. And therefore the software has updated and has slightly changed and therefore there is a mismatch.

So here you can see the spot colours have been added to our swatch palette from the document we have just loaded. This separates your layout to the individual inks.
For a CMYK print, we would get four printouts this is due to the separations and these are exactly the same as the positives as you use for the screen printing process.

This document will have 5 separations one for each of the process colours and one for each of the spot colours.

We can see these by going to:

This looks very similar to the swatches colour palette.

By changing this to seperations so you can click each option. The image has now enlarged in quality.

Also the overprint menu can separate the colours.

You can see each positive that is been produced and also how they build up. These will be used to make a printing plate. InDesign is using the colour channel information to display how CMYK positives are going to work.

The black is just added to key everything together.

If you have any swatches that you don't use it would be good practice to delete is as this could get sent to the printers and then it would get printed but it would be a blank print but you would get charged for it.

To take this view off just got to:

The main choices are in the output options:
This is the choice about how the separations about how we are going to print them.

A composite print is whatever you see on the screen is whatever is going to come out of the printer.

The separations option is what the printer would use. You inks section will become activated below. Here we can see the same inks which where in our separation palette. There is a little print option at each of the inks and here we can turn them off & on. Then if I clicked print now it would print out those five print separations.

These are to do with half tones these are how you print tints of a colour. When your working with half tones you have

Frequency: This is the dots per inch, this is how corse or fine your print is. The typical value of frequency is between 133 & 175 dots per inch.
Angle: If you are working with multiple inks printing one on top of each other, If you your CMYK printing and each of those are printed half tone. And each one of those is printing so they don't interferrence pattern as this will get an interference of dots. So to prevent this appearing on the print each of the dots are printed in a aparticular angle.

Moirè Pattern

if you are working with solid colours then you wouldn't have to use these.

Attributes palette is about knocking out. These are object specific, you have to select a shape or object.

In the overprint preview I would see how these two inks are going to mix.

You have to turn up the transparency.

You would use this for spot varnish. You can just use a spot colour and tell the printer not to print this pantone colour and apply as varnish.

Although, you can see here that it has knocked out the background of the writing onto the picture white and therefore this would not work as an overlay. As on the separations palette when I select all the colours but not the spot varnish one then is taken away from the image.

If I turn off my overprint preview then it just looks normal. So if you are doing pot varnishes or any overlay printing make sure you have overprint selected.
