Grids & Divine Proportions
Fibonacci Sequence
Not a measurement its a proportion tool.
A sequence mirrored throughout nature.
Relevant in all manners of design.
The human face follows the ratio, derived from the sea shell.
55 Point title should be complimented with 34 point body copy by applying the fibonacci sequence.
We had a go at the fibonacci sequence ourselves and here is mine drawn on gridded paper...
Dividing the Page
Golden Section
Based on paper sizes.
1.62 is the golden number - is what we need to divide the page.
Also known as the golden rectangle.
In which the ratio of the length to the width is the golden ratio.
EG.
If the page is 56cm
Then you divide 56 by 1.62 = 34.56 (Round up to 35)
Then take away 35 from 56 = 21 Then this is the length of the rectangle.
So then you will end up with something looking like this...
We had a go at this with gridded paper, here it is...
The Rule of Thirds
This governs the point of interest in a scene. Divide any given image into thirds & get 9 squares.
Then break the middle section into further thirds.
The Rule of thirds grid been put into action...
These arrows are to the focal points of the page therefore is promoting the rule of thirds as it says that people scanning the page are more likely to focus on the focal points. Which they believe are in the middle boxes. Also the division should be a comfortable view.
The arrows are pointing to information point. Here you can see it has been broken up into further thirds. Major images, news boxes & search bars are nestled on the horizontals of the thirds. This little shortcut will give you a design that is both easy on the eyes and makes them drawn to key pieces of information.
The magazine we was told to bring in we had to see if the rule of thirds worked with them...
I think this is very successful and then would fully follow the rule of thirds as the main image and logo title are in the centre thirds.
All the rest do not work very well so shows that the rule of thirds is a good rule to follow. Which is simple & quick.
Golden Section
In the fibonacci sequence you have the golden spiral in which they say allows your eyes flow round the page.
