Canons & Grids

Canons & Grids

Homework Task

This is my fibonacci sequence I did as homework, although I have unsucceedingly completed it as i didn't double the second sequence. The number 2 needs to be doubled and then the rest just taken across therefore because i got the first stage wrong it has effected the whole thing.

Van De graaf
A grid is like scaffolding, its elements that can be organised.

The VAN DE GRAAF canon is a historical reconstruction of a method that may have been used in book design & divide a page into pleasing proportions.

The construction of the Canon works for any page width, height ratio.

How to make the page set up:

Make a cross and then a line down the middle.
Then line from middle top to bottom corners.
Then on the intersections of the cross over (Anchor Point) of the lines draw a straight line up then to the center of the cross. (Make it into a bow tie)
Then make your box on intersections of the top diagonal line on bow tie line to the diagonal line till you meet the diagonal line then down til you get to next diagonal line.

You come out with very well proportioned text box that will suit your page well.
Having larger margins on the left & on the right, also the bottom. This is so that you can hold the book without your fingers getting in the way of text.

John Man suggests Guttenberg's bible pages was based on the golden ration.

Draw one line to top corner to bottom & then top corner to other bottom corner & the see the text box.

Resarivo's 9th
You will use canons & grids in unison.

Application to canon.
When using the 9ths you can drop in other elements such as headers & page numbers etc...

This is my attempt at the canon & Resarivo's 9th.... This is very close but the line at the bottom is slightly out....

Width of Column
Column width is more than just design format. It is also based on legibility.
Printed collateral is by the eye distance of 30-35cm
According to the empirical rule should be 7 words per line for any text of any length.
To keep the type area light & open we must consider the leading.

Overlong text lines tire the eyes.
As in Over short lines also makes your eyes change lines more therefore using too much energy.

Width of Column Size & Leading
The key is the ease of reading. The text must not impair the rhythm of reading. Unless you are designing for that purpose. This rule will not work for advertising & cannot be applied to titles & subtitles. As they are required to stand out & be absorbed by the eye, as its function is to sell!

Are columns just aesthetic creatures?

Margin Proportions
Margins can have a influence on the overall fell of a page of print.
Well balanced margins on the sides, head & tail can create an agreeable impression.

Too small - Looks Over Full
                                    Too large - Exaggeration

Badly Proportioned.
Side margins are the same width & looks wishy washy.
Same size margins can never generate an interesting page design.

They generate the impression of indecision & dullness.

Well Proportioned.
Intended to be the right hand page due to the larger left margin.
More applicable to literature rather than advertising. The margins are luxurious but would increase print costs.

The bottom margin should always be larger than the top.

Well... is it all about aesthetics?

Type Areas
Using previous methods of proportions allows to play with the placement of text boxes.
