Product & Distribution Brief

 Product & Distribution Brief

Here are my ideas for what i could do for all of the each areas distribution, publication & packaging. I did this as i wasn't sure what would be best for my research subject at first. I decided to go with the welcome package rather than a brochure as i will then get to design many things rather than just one booklet.

These are my initial ideas of what i could put in my welcome package. These are my ideas that i took to my critique and told them my plans.

This is my spider diagram of how I can put information graphics into my welcome package as i didn't understand how vague you could be.

So after the critique I decided i need to do more research into more adventurous things i can put into my welcome package although the most outrageous ones seemed to be too over the top for my target audience. After my further research i came up with my final ideas of what i was going to put into my package. And here are the nets and patterns and designs i came up with to start with.

So then i started my design and i wanted to create a pattern. My initial thought was to use two colours in my pattern although when i revisited this i thought it was rather tacky & unattractive. So i decided to use only the deep purple and make the brushes smaller to show more detail.
I wanted to have an art deco look and the best pattern i though was most art deco was the floral pattern. And also wanted to use purple as it relates me to luxury and warmth, a friendly colour.

This is my flyer that is to show the history of the hotel as i didn't know what i could put in the package that could give the information what the butler can not. I decided to use a fold out leaflet as it would reveal a long line to allow to put a timeline down the middle. When closed it would be A5 size. The images show the old period of the hotel and then new look of the hotel.
As you can see i have used the pattern here on the leaflet i have lowered the opacity of it due to the lessened ability to read the writing although i think it still works very well subtly.

This is the second side of the leaflet the flats open and each flap opens up to give you more interesting information to make you get the best out of your stay. The bottom area is upside down as it needed to be to be read when folded up. Again the pictures used are to represent the bullet points. I have chosen to use the same pattern on both sides due to the writing on both sides although it still will follow the style.

This is my wallet to put all the items in. I have decided that i want to put a flap only on one side so the other side is full pattern and also put a slit within the flap as there is a lot of small items that may get lost under the flap. Then also a little area to put the business card of the person who is there chauffeur.

This is the design of the key card i wanted to do a fold in again to imitate the fold of the flyer. The middle section will have little slits to put the key through so they have a nice presentation when given the key. This will also have the purple pattern on the inside with a more vivid look.

This is a box of chocolates that will be put in the room on the dressing table as a little welcome gift when settling into the suite. I have used infographics here on the bottom by using the pictures of the chocolates on the bottom and also numbering them as this is explaining with no only using words. I have received this net from the design package book I took out from the library.

This is a door hanger every hotel needs door hangers i wanted them to be a typical door hanger as some from my research was very inventive but very inappropriate for my audience. This i thought was the best option to stay safe and sticking with the sophisticated theme.

This is placed into the wallet so they can read through the pack and then realise they don't have to unpack their own case. This will be folded in half so it can be stood up when read from there wallet. Again the purple would be used on the opposite side so you can see the inside when stood up.

This would be placed on a shoe horn or on polishing brushes which would be place in the walk in wardrobe so you don't have to polish your own shoes if you don't have time. This will be double sided again. And maybe ribbon used to hold it too either item. It has to be attached to something relating to do with shoe cleaning.

This is the business card, i have chosen to use a simple but effective getting the message across fast but with simplicity. The text is not too much but is overlapping to create a modern look. The use of all the call to action on the front so you don't have to do great searching for the information.

This is a letter I thought I would add in as a little personal message from the manager of the hotel as he may not get to speak to the clientele personally. This is also allowing them to feel special and therefore listening to his information and then getting feedback and them getting to kow more about the hotel began etc..

This is the feedback form i wanted to add into the welcome package as when doing my research they said that customer service was one of there important factors that they pride upon. This is therefore a short but sweet feedback form where they can express their opinions. And then hand it in at the end of their stay.

I printed out the designs to see the size as i wasn't quite sure if they was the right size. They was all correct apart from the door hanger was a little big i wanted the door hanger to be bigger than usual but not as big as it is at the moment. Therefore now i can change before i properly print them down in the print room.

I then wanted to have gold ink so therefore had to do screen printing i only used one A3 screen for these separate logos. This was the first time i used screen printing so was very dubious and took me longer as i wanted to make sure i did it properly. The first day i cleaned my screen and then allowed it to dry in the drying room, til then second day then i lichened my screen, and allowed it to dry in the cabinet before exposing the  image above on to the screen.

This is my screen when i finished the process, i now need to tape up the edges so the paint doesn't seap out of the yellow mesh areas. There is also a hole in the mesh which is to the left which you can see as the lichen has become thicker than anywhere else. He told he to put a piece of newsprint over the logos i don't want to use while using the other and therefore it wont get too sticky and block up the screen.

These are my final pieces i have screen printed them and cut them out. I am very happy with finish although I think i should have smallened the writing on my flyer, as it looks rather big print. Although i am very happy with how the rest have turned out. The colour looks the same as on the screen and also i like the use of the grey type as the black was too harsh against the lilac.

After Final Critique

We then had a critic in which we left our work and the tutors looked at it without us been there then told us what they thought of it. They said about my work that it was very professional and there is a large amount of work although there isn't no evidence of information graphics in which i need to show to meet the brief.

I think this comment was very fair as i think i carried away with the design of the package and forgot about the aims of the brief rather than just creating a welcome package. I then didnt know how to put this into my current work so therefore i thought the best way to meet this criteria was to create a new piece of work.

I was debating whether to do a concertina leaflet which had interesting facts in such as:
  • They hold 50 varieties if tea
  • They sell 1000 lobsters a year
  • They sell 60000 bottles of champagne a year
  • 203 Bedrooms
  • 67 Suites
  • 400 people that work at Claridge's
  • Wash 1500 towels a day.
As i wanted my design to be fully infographics for this concertina leaflet as it wanted to use symbols to show the quantitative facts. Then i realised these was all very high numbers and therefore would not work as I had planned, so then my second idea was to make a brochure with a key as the main focus on the privileges you receive with the room.

I therefore made a brochure with the rooms available and what they have to offer, I used a key within this booklet in which they can use to see what they receive within this room. Here it is:

This is very similar to the wallet front as i like the simplicity and the main focus on the art deco pattern.  The logo would obviously be in gold ink rather than black but this is the only way of showing it on screen. The same font has been used and will be used throughout the brochure to keep consistency of the branding.

This is the second double page spread I have placed this to keep the design flowing of the double pattern on the opposite side. This a welcoming paragraph and what you should expect on your stay at the hotel. As most of these will not be experiencing the Claridge's experience while reading through this so its important to put you and allow you to imagine the experience.

This is the main reason for this design as here is the key to allow me to show use of infographics, this has some obvious symbols but some not obvious so they have to use the key. The little paragraph above tells them about the key and why it is in use etc... The pattern is also on the writing side too but doesn't seem to be showing on this screenshot.

This is the first page with the brochure showing the key and what they expect form each room to make sure that it is for them and whether they will like it as each room has different factors. The images of the room on the left are from the website and are the actual pictures of the room. The symbols from the key are on the bottom right underneath all the information of the room. They are just the added extras.

The images are very poor quality been due to this been InDesign and therefore the actual pixels of the image are not stored to view only to print. This is also something new i have used within this brief as i have never made something in InDesign. Although it is very similar to the other adobe programmes it took a while to grasp the grabber tool etc...

This is information that it apparent to all and a closing statement of how to make your visit your own and what time you can check in and out as this is an important factor to travel etc...

This is the back page as this has the address on of the hotel.

If i had more time i would have done more pages for more rooms but i started this after the final critique after i received my feedback. I think this has been very successful and is simple and easily followed. Also it has they most important information of each room. I will not be printing this due to cost running low.

Evaluation

This brief i thought i have created a very sophisicated final piece although i think that i may have got carried away with the design and haven't concentrated on the brief as I didn't include much infographics and therefore wasn't concentrating on the main focus. The screen printing was a new method for me and i thought the preparation went very well but i ended up bleeding the paint through under the tape and therefore went on the back of my wallet. But i really enjoyed this method and will definitely be using it again. I think the flyer could have done with more development due to the large printed font so therefore needed to make it a smaller print but i didn't check this due to forgetting to print this out on my booking and then forgetting to screen print it. Then i returned to screen printing to find that my screen had been already been reused as i took my name off not thinking that i would need it again. I therefore have learnt from a lesson well learnt.
