Understanding Layout

Understanding Layout

Gutters    The inside margins or blank space between two facing pages is the gutter. The gutter space is that extra space allowance used to accommodate the binding in books and magazines. The amount of gutter needed varies depending on the binding method.
Gutter is sometimes used to refer to the space between columns of text in a page layout.

Grid     A typographic grid is a two-dimensional structure made up of a series of intersecting vertical and horizontal axes used to structure content. The grid serves as an armature on which a designer can organize text and images in a rational, easy to absorb manner.

Column     The art or profession of using design elements as typography and images to convey information or create an effect. These are verticle sections on a page separated by a gutter or blank space.

Margins      Any deliberately unprinted space on a page, especially surrounding a block of text. Margins are used not only to aid in the aesthetics and the readability of a page, but also to provide allowances for trimming, binding, and other post-press operations.

Sub Heads       Subhead is a phrase that follows a headline.  A subhead is presented in a smaller size than the main headline because it is secondary in importance to the head.

DPS     two facing pages of newspaper or magazine where the textual material on the left hand side continues across to the right hand side. This can also be used to its advantage and of using two pages and therefore making the page interactive.

Dropcaps         the first letter of a paragraph that is enlarged to "drop" down two or more lines, as in the next paragraph. Drop caps are often seen at the beginning of novels, where the top of the first letter of the first word lines up with the top of the first sentence and drops down to the four or fifth sentence to the beginning of a section.

Headline      A heading at the top of an article or page in a newspaper or magazine.

Measures      In typography, measure is synonymous with line length.

Folio Number        A large sheet of paper folded once in the middle, making two leaves or four pages of a book or manuscript. A leaf of a book numbered only on the front side. Therefore all pages/leafs are numbered separately and all have a single page number on usually in the bottom outside corner.

Pagination      The art of planning page format to allow sequence page numbering.

Imposition      This is one of the fundamental steps in the printing process. It consists in the arrangement of the printed product’s pages on the printer’s sheet, in order to obtain faster printing, simplify binding and reduce paper waste. Correct imposition minimizes printing time by maximizing the number of pages per impression, reducing cost of press time and materials. To achieve this, the printed sheet must be filled as fully as possible.

Communication Is A Virus

Communication Is A Virus

This is my brainstorming for the project. And all our initial ideas.
So after these we decided we wanted to go down the avenue of re-branding and promoting an exercise band that tells you more of the things you want to know for example how much you are losing etc... And more focused towards an English audience rather than American as most of the bands we have seen when researching have been very American directed.

Me and Laura decided to take it upon us to do the flyer as, we had to change the idea of the posters many times as the boys in the group wanted to use swearing and pictures of overweight people as the shockfactor. Although, me and Laura wanted to make the flyer more information in the direction of how many steps calculate so many calories etc... so our flyer was never changed as we didn't use offensive language etc...

The flyer innovation that laura found, we have decided that I am going to do the inserts and she will do the big folded piece into a poster.

The Design Sheets I Did before Developing them Digitally:

Logo Development:
The logo i wanted to create is showing the c as a belly. I think the brackets and the c diagonal to represent a belly button is the best. Maybe the c needs to be more recognisable as a c. But i think this is the best one out of the three i have developed from my design sheets.

Illustrator Posters:

I really like the look of these posters for the flyer. The idea for this came from my research with the building and i shows you how much you have climbed but instead it shows you how much you have walked off the doughnut and how much you need to walk further to walk it off fully. I think the colour scheme I have changed it too really works well too, with the set colours which was set by our group.

This was my next idea of having an illustration of a lift with out of order sign over it... I think this works well also and I like how it looks as the colours are again very appropriate.

Although the group have now decided to do a unhealthy photo shoot to help relate to students our target audience more and highlight why they need to do steps more than unusual because they eat lots of unhealthy food. So i thought about using photographic images rather than illustrated.

Photography Posters:

This is the first image i found to use for the flyer. Although its not very realistic and I found it very hard to make it look more realistic. I think it needs to be on a white background too rather than a black because it stands out more on white.

This is both of the images i was going to use, i like the use of the beat it. But i think i need to change the image of the doughnut and the type on the pizza as it doesn't look very aesthetic at the moment.

This was my second go by using a different doughnut, I think this looks a lot more professional finish. This has also got the logo at the bottom of the poster. I think the use of the colour has brought out the steps to go which shows how many steps for each section of doughnut, and therefore think more about the things they are eating or just in smaller portions.

Type Posters:

I have now decided to go for more of a type driven posters. This is a play with the logo and name of the organisation. As we have used a fact and then put fact at the bottom. This is due to everyone's main excuse for taking the lift is that its quicker but experiments have shown that taking the lift is not nessarily faster than taking the stairs.

This is a play on Frankie says relax slogan. Its like a command in which people may listen to. The use of the black background and white type really makes it stand out.

I thought setting them a challenge would make them want to do it more. As they don't want to be beaten etc.. I wanted to stick with the theme but I think the one on the right stands out more that it is more of a challenge. Although the left one is more sticking to the theme of the other posters etc...

These are different ways to shay the one thing. I think i prefer the right poster as the it gets the point across faster and more to the point. Again its following the theme of the colour scheme and the font we have chosen to use as a group.

The one on the left is going to direct people to water fountains as we didnt want to have bottled water etc... Although, I think it was essential that the words free was big and more frontal than the other words. I think the right one is OK but we are kinda suggesting that all students go out, and people may get offended etc...

This is the information part that I wanted to add into the flyer additives. These are information but in basic forms so its not too overloaded as they wouldn't want to read that.

Also wanted to bring it into their normal routine and telling them something that they probably would do. Also bringing in the fact that it is also cheaper too. I think the the canteen downstairs needs to be less highlighted. I think the opposite side needs to be maybe not also text but maybe a image that relates to the text as I think it may be too much.

I thought about this also when designing my flyer inserts as I thought it might be a good wy of showing and recognising their own development. Where they can set a goal for themselves and then write what they have done. Although I don't know if students would be bothered to use this and therefore would be a waste when information could be put on there.

Image Posters:

I have decided to use the photos from the photo shoot that the boys in the group did so the posters link in with the flyers somehow. And also this will add extra information and make more sense of the posters by adding information over the images also... I think the bets layout for this image is the top right one as the others are not a readable and also not very aesthetically pleasing.

I tried out both of these as i wasn't sure if it worked at first but I do think I should go with the theme of covering the face and having the food as the main focal of the picture.

So because i have decided a theme it now makes it easier as I can just make the type to best fit the face etc...

So this one was kinda different because of the lack of writing and although I could have wrote it over the eyes. It became illegible as neither of the black white or mustard was vibrant enough so decided to just enlarge the picture so that the burger is the main focus.

Front & Backs of Flyers

Further Work That was not used:

Motivational Posters:

I thought these would be better in white as it is more brighter and therefore is better for the people who are actually taking the stairs and to motivate them to keep going. I found all these quotes and thought they would be beneficial to the stairs users. So these would be put up on the stairs.

Motivational Stickers:
I also thought about doing stickers for the stairs looking like this. Maybe need to put the logo on there somewhere. The use of putting the on the actual step you can read them when at the bottom. It would be a motivational quote to make you want to go up the steps.

Floor Stickers:

These are some stickers I thought of creating to put on the floor and direction them to the stairs. They have different facts and inspirational quotes to make people want to read them and therefore follow them. I think these work very well, but I am not sure how we would print them out as they would have to be on easy peel sticker paper which we do not stock in the college.

Posters in Situe:

Me, Dan, Jasper, Will & Alex went round the college and put up posters around the college making our organisation know and therefore by doing this we thought putting them around the college is the best chance to make it viral. We tried to put a type poster and a photography poster together to have a quote/slogan to go with the picture.

Flyer Put Together:

This is the flyer put together. I made the slot in flyers too small at first because Laura told me they was A7 & not A6 size. Although it was easily rectified and I had enough time to reprint it and have the professional finish. I think this good and i like the way you can slightly see the difference between the two designs so you know to pull it out etc...

Design Boards I Did:

I started doing the design boards the night before but then we came in and everyone wanted to do one so we used my content one which also had the photos of the stickers on the stairs which are not on this for some reason.
