Alphabet Soup Jordan

Development Work

I want to incorporate both skating and retro type within my typeface design. These ideas has developed from my research into type I though looked similar to the style I wanted to portray.

These are my first ideas using copper black as my basis of design. I don't think these work very well and the solid block needs to be more prominent to the design.

I then wanted to play with the idea of triangle as when i researched into skateboarding the A was mainly created through a triangles.

I then choose more of a blocky typeface to manipulate called Braggadocio.
Theses are my developments scanned in, they show how each letter has developed until i found my style i appreciated the most.

This is my final layout of the typefaces on A1.

I decided to create my name badge in a skateboard as I liked the style of many of the design i seen on skateboards and the chaotic design.

This is my badge I created on Jordan.

These are our Final Layouts in the critique stuck on the wall the top right one is the alphabet Jordan created for me.

In the critique they said that some of my letters are very strong and others have legibility faults with them or maybe the style is less effective. Although they like how I have added the two styles together. So I have decided to change some of my letterforms, here they are...

My current one is on the left but I wanted to play with the use of triangles as the A was a very strong letter.

Then i thought maybe I could use the tricks I learnt in the illustrator tutorials due to the short cut of pressing alt to create a smaller shape when resizing it in the center.

This is the set once the new ones so far been added. I would also change the R, J, K and maybe more.

Evaluation of the Brief

In this brief I believe I did well due to starting with a completely new subject and not in the type of style i like to work in. Although i wouldn't change my final message behind the alphabet I believe I would change the final design due to the difficultness of approach to all letterforms. I worked at a very good time scale and had time to take my time with my final layout and name badge. I have now adjusted some of my letterforms for my typeface to become strong as a whole, rather than just some individual letters.

Alphabet Soup 1

Alphabet Soup Task 1

To start my thought process off i decided to create a spider diagram to get all my thoughts dwn and decided what i wanted to do next to develop onto my next stage of design.

I dont know why my spider diagram is loading onto here upside down as on my laptop it is facing the right way. From here I can research into individual things into more indepth research and develop along the way.

My further research is on the Design Context Blog which it will show you how i have come to my finalising my media and stock i will use and how i am going to portray my idea of Glow.

This is my development in book work i didnt really develop each indiviual letter too much due to the need of 10 different example of 10 letters. Here you can see what each letter is representing and how I think I am going to achieve it as to drawing with pencil and blending with chalk is a different practice.

I decided to use the copper black font as my starter base and i added slight changes. Which i then traced onto layout paper and then cut them out of black 10x10 piece of card for my letter style either using the cutout itself to blend outwards or the 10x10 piece with the cutout on to blending inwards.

I decided to use black card and white chalk as my media and stock due to the materials showing the most glowing effect, but i also tried out charcoal with white card which wasnt effective as shown below.

Here are my Final 10:

A

B

C

D

E

F

G

H

I

J

Overall, I was quite happy with the different ideas i came up with although they look quite simular, they all have a different meaning and come from a word i found when i research the word GLOW. I think the letter E and the B was the most successful and then the letter F was the least due to the resemblance of a lightbulb.
